The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today reminded the Parliament that 150 000 students across Australia are in limbo as the Youth Allowance Bill languishes in the Senate.

Ms Gillard said in Question Time that the Opposition continued to support retaining a Youth Allowance system where a student whose parents earn $40 000 a year can miss out on a full allowance, but where students who live at home and whose parents earn $200 000 a year can manipulate the system to get the full rate of allowance.

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today said that Mr Abbott needs to explain how he will fund changes to the Youth Allowance system that would offer new scholarships but would leave in place arrangements where kids from Australia’s richest families continue to get full support.

In yet another unfunded proposal, the Coalition has said the Government should split the bill and pay scholarships without making the necessary changes to stop the rorts.
