New affordable housing in the ACT (News)

The Rudd Government is investing more than $1 billion in the National Rental Affordability Scheme, which will deliver 50,000 new homes across Australia by 2012.

Federal Minister for Housing Tanya Plibersek and ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope today officially opened a new 24 home National Rental Affordability Scheme development in Holt.

The Holt 24 Freestyle Apartments project has been developed by CHC Affordable Housing and includes 16 one-bedroom apartments and eight two-bedroom apartments.

All tenants are low or moderate income earners, including a painter who received the keys to his new apartment at today’s official opening.

Construction is underway on the first of 85 houses to be built in the Alice Springs town camps under the Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program.

The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, the Northern Territory Minister for Central Australia, Karl Hampton, and the Minister for Indigenous Health and the Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, today welcomed the start of work on the first new house at Larapinta Valley.

Street to Home program in the ACT (News)

Federal Minister for Housing, Tanya Plibersek and ACT Minister for Housing, Joy Burch today launched ‘Street to Home’ – an assertive outreach service aimed to help homeless people sleeping rough in the ACT.

Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science, today announced that Defence Housing Australia (DHA) is making strong progress one year into the Government's stimulus program.

"As part of the stimulus plan, DHA was allocated $245.58 million to build 802 houses throughout Australia.  Due to program efficiencies another 27 houses have also been included in the program, giving a total of 829 houses," Mr Combet said.

The chance to own their own home is a step closer for Alice Springs traditional owners living at Ilpeye Ilpeye, a town camp located on the eastern boundary of Alice Springs.

 

Through the Australian Government’s acquisition of the land, the underlying tenure of Ilpeye Ilpeye has changed from community lease to freehold held by the Commonwealth.  Any underlying native title is preserved.

Federal Minister for Housing Tanya Plibersek today visited a $5.5 million housing project at Hackham where 16 new homes are being constructed under the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan.

The two and three bedroom homes, being built by Qattro property services, will be energy efficient and have solar power hot water systems and rain water tanks.

The announcement was made
on the first anniversary of the launch of the Australian Government's
Homelessness White Paper.

"Through the White Paper we
have made reducing homelessness a national priority," Minister for Housing Tanya
