Government funds 200 traineeships for Indigenous students (News)

Minister for Employment Participation Mark Arbib today launched the 2010 Aboriginal School Based Traineeship Program, which will see 200 Indigenous high school students work with businesses across Australia.

Minister for Employment Participation Mark Arbib today launched the 2010 Aboriginal School Based Traineeship Program, which will see 200 Indigenous high school students work with businesses across Australia.
 
Senator Arbib said the Government was providing $700,000 to the Aboriginal Employment Strategy (AES) to support this year’s program which could provide participants with a pathway to employment.
 

Government to introduce ‘My University’ website (News)

Speaking at the Universities Australia Higher Education Conference this morning, Ms Gillard said that following on from the success of the My School website, which publishes rich achievement information about each of Australia’s schools, it is now time for the Government to implement a similar tool at the university level.

The My University website will inform students about institutions, courses and pathways and showcase the quality of Australia’s higher education providers.

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today announced that the Australian Maritime College in Launceston will receive a $2.1 million payment to help address skills shortages in Australia’s maritime industries.

The grant will support the AMC to deliver maritime and maritime-related vocational education and training to alleviate the national shortage of seafarers.

The Government today has condemned Opposition Education spokesperson Christopher Pyne for saying he knows better than Vice-Chancellors about students’ needs and is once again calling on him to pass the Youth Allowance bill so 150,000 students can be paid scholarships.

The Government has been working hard to get this Bill to pass and as late as yesterday introduced further sensible, economically responsible amendments.

The Government's new rules for education providers of international students will mean all colleges will need to re-register under stronger criteria by the end of 2010.

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today welcomed the strengthening of rules for education providers of international students by requiring all colleges to re-register under new, stronger criteria by the end of 2010.

The new rules come under the Education Services for Overseas Students Amendment (Re-registration of Providers and Other Measures) Bill 2009 which passed the Senate yesterday and will help weed out dodgy providers from the industry.

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today reminded the Parliament that 150 000 students across Australia are in limbo as the Youth Allowance Bill languishes in the Senate.

Ms Gillard said in Question Time that the Opposition continued to support retaining a Youth Allowance system where a student whose parents earn $40 000 a year can miss out on a full allowance, but where students who live at home and whose parents earn $200 000 a year can manipulate the system to get the full rate of allowance.
