New Chinook CH-47 helicopters (News)

The new helicopters, to replace the existing fleet of six CH-47D Chinooks, will give the ADF a robust, deployable medium-lift helicopter capability out to 2040.

The Minister for Defence, Senator John Faulkner, today announced that the Government has given second pass approval to a major project to acquire seven CH‑47F Chinook helicopters for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) at a cost of around $755 million.

“The Government has now approved the details of this procurement, announced in last year’s White Paper, which will replace the existing fleet of six CH-47D Chinooks,” Senator Faulkner said.

“The establishment of the joint Australian Submarine Program Office is a vital step towards achieving the submarine output Government expects,” Mr Combet said.

“The Australian Submarine Program Office will be established in Adelaide to jointly manage submarine availability required by Government.

Troops home after successful Afghan tour (News)

730 members of the Second Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force (MRTF-2) are returning home following an intensive eight month deployment to Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force.

These Australian soldiers have made important progress in Oruzgan Province. They have helped to expand our mentoring and training effort of the Afghan National Army, build the security capacity of the Afghan Government, and delivered more reconstruction activities for the local community.

Australia’s greatest peacetime naval disaster, HMAS Voyager, will be remembered today, 46 years on.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Alan Griffin said 82 lives were lost when the Voyager and HMAS Melbourne collided off the south-east coast of Australia in 1964.

“On the evening of 10 February 1964, Melbourne, an aircraft carrier, and Voyager, a Daring Class Destroyer, were taking part in training exercises off the coast of Jervis Bay, south east of Sydney when disaster struck,” Mr Griffin said.

Contrary to some media reports this morning, combat uniforms worn by Australian Soldiers are manufactured in Australia.

No Australian troops are currently deployed, or in training, wearing combat uniforms made from Chinese fabric.

A tender was won late last year by a local clothing manufacturer from Bendigo, Australian Defence Apparel (ADA) to provide camouflage uniforms under an interim arrangement.

This is great news for the Bendigo economy and provides great support for local manufacturing and jobs.

Defence housing aided by stimulus program (News)

The construction of an extra 829 Defence houses nationwide under the Rudd Government's stimulus program is making a big difference in regional centres.

Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science, today announced that Defence Housing Australia (DHA) is making strong progress one year into the Government's stimulus program.

"As part of the stimulus plan, DHA was allocated $245.58 million to build 802 houses throughout Australia.  Due to program efficiencies another 27 houses have also been included in the program, giving a total of 829 houses," Mr Combet said.

Meeting with NATO Defence Ministers in Istanbul (News)

Senator Faulkner took the opportunity to reinforce Australia’s commitment in Afghanistan, and the expectation that Australia would continue to be consulted in NATO decision-making processes.
